,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,A full decision tree for this branch will be developed once the working with central branch is completed. (Honest!)
For now, why don't you see what the other path would look like
[[Work with Central to implement the ePortfolio|2) Work with Central to implement the ePortfolio]]
Some possible outcomes of keeping it in the faculty:
Key people in the faculty change jobs, the pilot runs for a semester with inconclusive results and is then abandoned.
Or
Frank discussions are had at a high level as word spreads of the project and the Director of IT convinces the Dean of the Faculty (via the VC or DVCA) that this is a project that needs to be worked on with Central.
(Reasons could include bad high-level relationships with the vendor, alignment with an in-development institutional strategy, concerns about procurement integrity)
After weighing up both options, you decide that it is best to work with Central to maximise support and the likelihood of success. Fay will remember that, but she is a professional. Your reputation in the faculty takes a small dent.
You speak to Metti to discuss what the next steps in the project are. Metti thinks for a moment and says

It's important to note at this point that the process for getting an ed tech implementation project from being a faculty priority to something that is actively on the Central IT workflow is far more complex than simply clicking a link in a game.
It involves meetings, negotiations, prioritisation, approval processes, meetings, wolves, arcane rituals and additional meetings. It's probably a game in itself but I wouldn't play it.
In order to keep things moving, we are going to wave a magic wand over that bit and hey presto, the ePortfolio pilot project is now part of the Central IT team's workload.
Also, for the sake of simplifying this game, as the product owner, you will have far greater influence on decisions in this process than might ordinarily happen. This is to emphasise the impact that these decisions can have.

After a small celebration - it's important to enjoy these small milestones - Chris and Merin come to talk to you about the contract.
Merin says "We need to talk about support. The main question is around who will provide what kinds of support? Specifically, think about the difference between "the tool is broken" vs "I don’t know how to use it" kind of support."

There is a 50/50 chance that this will either increase or decrease your student evaluation by 1 point, based on the fact that students may not get support as quickly as with the other options but they may also take confidence from your extra depth of knowledge about the tool.

One of the main reasons that you chose $vendor was that the product seems easy to use. They have fairly rich support resources on their website and in the ePortfolio itself and you feel confident that there won't be a huge need for user support.
Fay tells you that she feels the same way. She does suggest creating a space in your GNUdle LMS site where students can ask questions and potentially support each other as well. Some people would say that the process of implementing a piece of education technology is not for the squeamish.
Some people are told by education technology vendors that it only takes 30 minutes to install their product and then wonder why it actually takes 6 months.
It's because the process of ensuring that the product is fit for purpose is a comprehensive one.
This game is intended to help you understand and navigate that process.
Welcome to Untitled Ed Tech Game.

You are heavily invested now in making sure this project is a success. You don't want to leave anything to chance and you figure that the people that make the product will be the best people to provide support. This costs $10,000 and reduces the risk of the project by 10%.
You don't have time to learn the ins and outs of this product, you just need to know enough to be able to teach with it.

[[Info - How does the pilot go?]] This screen provides a brief paragraph story about what happens to you, the students, your faculty and the university. (Based on your scores and your other choices)
''Money''
Your project left the university with $<<= $budget>>, from an initial budget of $100,000.
<<if $budget lte 0>>
You went over budget as Cassandra Friedman predicted. Bloody economists. You give up your office with the large windows overlooking the garden and move into a smaller office next to the toilets. Part of your research funding is reallocated to the School of Economics, who buy a bar fridge and table-tennis table for the staff lounge.
<<else>>
Well done, you stayed in budget. Not that this was ever about the money for you anyway. You're happy to know that your office and research budget are secure.
<</if>>
''Time''
You have <<= $time>> days left from the planned 60 days.
<<if $time lte 0>>
You didn't quite achieve your deadline but, with a lot of help for your colleagues at GNU, you were still able to make the project work, for the most part. The fact that it was rushed at the end probably didn't help your stress levels or student engagement with the tool. You will certainly allow more time on your next project, if you get one.
<<else>>
You were able to get the <<= $vendor>> ePortfolio up and running in time for Summer Semester. This meant that you were able to learn valuable lessons from this smaller, more motivated cohort of students that you could then apply in your larger Semester 1 class. You have no doubt that this played a significant role in the success of this project.
<</if>>
''Learning & Teaching''
Before you started this project, your student evaluation score for this unit was 5 out of 10. It is now <<= $LearnTeach>> out of 10
<<if $LearnTeach lte 5 and $LearnTeach gte 2>>
Trying new approaches to teaching or new tools can be a leap of faith. In this instance, the choices you made were seen by your students as harming their learning experience. Research shows however that student evaluation scores often drop the first few times an innovation is tried. Your Associate Dean Education, Akira certainly knows this and encourages you to apply what you have learned to your next attempt.
<<elseif $LearnTeach lte 2>>
While this was a good idea, your students had a bad experience and rated you poorly. The decisions you made in this project negatively impacted their learning and your course is being reviewed
<<elseif $LearnTeach gte 5 and $LearnTeach lte 8>>
Research shows however that student evaluation scores often drop the first few times an innovation is tried. This didn't happen so clearly something has gone right. You start thinking about how you will develop your use of this tool
<<else>>
You absolutely smashed this project. Your students are happy and student enquiries about this unit have risen dramatically. Your colleagues want to know more about what you did and your Dean is nominating you for a University Learning and Teaching award. <<set $reputation += 2>>
<</if>>
''Risk''
Your decisions on this project brought a <<= $risk>>% risk of something serious impacting the university.
<<if $risk gte 30>>
When the General Manager of the University heard about the risks you took with this project, they nearly fainted. You now have to get approval from three layers of management whenever you want to buy anything more expensive than a paperclip.
<</if>>
''Reputation''
Your reputation is sitting at <<= $reputation>> out of 10 (<<= $whatrep[$reputation]>> status)
<<if $reputation gte 5>>
Your work on this project, alongside your colleagues in the education technology and GNU IT teams (among others), has put a new shine on you in the Faculty. People actually listen now when you say something in meetings.
<<else>>
You made some choices that have affected your colleagues in the faculty negatively. Even if the rest of the project was a success, you have a bit of work to do in mending those fences.
